Here you can read about the latest news and events from the orchard railway.

Thanks to the Indian Summer September Sundays were rain free but quieter as holidays finished and schools reopened after the holidays. Even so we ticked over during the month with a noticeable number of repeat trips.

The Railway continues in its role as a premier international and European railway attraction. This month we were visited by overseas railway enthusiasts from Auckland (New Zealand) Lille, Nancy, Rouen, Toulouse and Tours (all France), Heidelberg (Germany), Madrid (Spain) and Zurich (Switzerland).

As our reputation spreads we also seem to be pulling in locals from Faversham and Sittingbourne who come up to Brogdale for a day out. The circuit seems to be railway-café or café-railway plus a visit to the Courtyard shops. Other visitors included those from Canterbury, Ealing (London) Stourbridge (West Midlands), Redditch (likewise), Tunbridge Wells and Wrotham.

We have begun gearing up for our Santa Specials at Christmas. Weather permitting we aim to run on Saturday and Sunday 6th & 7th Dec, and Sunday 14th. For those who have not come before the deal is a ride, a rail transfer to the Grotto, a visit to Santa and a small present. Usually there is a mince pie and mulled wine for adults. At the request of Santa (who is now in training) we will be running a new queuing system this year (find out more here). As we are a non-profit making society run entirely with volunteers tickets are very reasonable at £3.50 for kids and £1.50 for adults.

Building maintenance has now got as far as the Ticket Office which is being re-clad on the prevailing wind (and rain) sides. It looks a bit piebald at present but normal appearance should be restored in time for Christmas.

We are also building up our stock of concrete sleepers. Using these means reduced track maintenance in future years.

As ever new volunteer staff, especially DIYers, are always welcome to join our Railway Society. If you visit us at Brogdale on most Tuesdays or Wednesdays or Sundays (11am-4pm) we’ll show you round and hopefully talk you into joining us!

As would be expected the Monday August Bank Holiday was a wash-out but the 2 day Cider Festival a great success. The Plum Festival earlier in the month was 75% sun and 25% downpour. We also ran three parties and one evening wedding

Not forgetting our Santa Specials at Christmas there are still a few slots left for late summer weddings and kids’ parties. Contact Mick 01795 474211 or try our website for details. Rates are very reasonable as we are a non-profit making society

Being hot for most of the month seems to have brought the crowds out. Besides the usual Sunday running we also had four kids parties as well as a 2 day Brogdale Cherry weekend. The next festivals are Plums and Cider festivals in August and Apples in October (see the Brogdale website for more info)

As Easter Bank Holidays go it was 50/50. That is, 50% rain and 50% sun.  Anyhow thanks to all those who came and visited us and tried out the new luxury first class passenger bendy bus carriages. The apple, cherry and plum blossoms are now out which makes for a scenic ride. Not forgetting the various teddy bears, tigers, giraffes and dolphins hidden alongside the track for the kids to spot

After a couple of month’s break we re-opened this month and were pleasantly surprised to find that we almost had full trains from the first train we ran. We have become a definite Brogdale fixture for tourist and local families alike.  Opening and running times can be found on our website

Although the Railway is taking a break from public running there's still quite a lot going on. For one thing Santa and his elves have had to recover from their Christmas specials.

The first of our 'Santa Specials' was run 1st December. Two more to go, being the 8th, and 15th. It didn't rain or snow on the 1st, the sun was out (a bit) and everyone enjoyed themselves.
