Here you can read about the latest news and events from the orchard railway.

Now its summer, its one Brogdale festival after the other. In July it was the Cherry Festival which had the Railway running at full capacity all day. Our thanks to passengers for their patience and to all staff who worked flat out to keep the rides running and on time. The next festival is the ‘Artisan’ Cider festival on the 29/30th August

In spite of Operation Stack the Railway continues to attract visitors from all over. In July our international guests came from Abbeville (France), Bilbo (Spain), Bratislava (Slovakia), Brisbane (Australia), Dunkerque (France) as well as Guildford, Sidcup and Staplehurst. There were also locals and visitors from the North Kent towns

It’s always worth remembering the Railway can be hired for kids’ parties and weddings.  We run the kids’ parties on a Sunday, a day when it never rains (much) and the sun always shines (usually). A few slots are still available. Rates and contact details for 2015 are on this website

As far as on-going maintenance goes the Ticket Office has been top-coated with ‘Muffin’ and now just needs its finishing touches. Work has begun on  Barry’s Box. Track ballasting continues, as does hedge trimming and generally hacking back summer weeds

The Staff Tea Hut has been slightly upgraded with a fridge freezer and new tea-bags

Although Christmas is now only 4 months away we already planning our ‘Santa Specials’. These involve a train ride, a shunt to Santa’s grotto, and for the kids, a visit to the Great Man and a festive heart-to-heart together with a small, usually edible, present.  Parents usually get a mince pie and/or  something warming. Although we don’t like to disappoint,  booking is essential – see our website (search via ‘Faversham Miniature Railway’) for further details

And finally as ever new volunteer staff, especially DIYers, are always welcome to join our Railway Society.  If you visit us at Brogdale on a Sunday (11am-4pm) or a Thursday morning we’ll show you round and hopefully talk you into joining our other new 2015 recruits

May was a steady month with not too much Sunday rain. It was even sunny on occasion .The station daffodils have now died off and the blossom on the fruit trees has gone

We had a steady stream of local visitors from Faversham & Sittingbourne, Ashford. Canterbury, Iwade and Whitstable.  Further afield visitors came from Scotland (Stirling), Oxfordshire (Hook Norton) and Welwyn Garden City. Our international visitors arrived from China (Nanking), Canada (Abbotsfield nr Vancouver) and Denmark (Elsinore). Interestingly quite a number of our local family customers are repeat trips, usually at the insistence of their kids

Now summer is finally here the maintenance team have been fighting off the trackside weeds, cutting back hedging and keeping the grass down. The  Ticket Office has been undercoated prior to its final top coat. Next project is Barry’s Box, then the station signal box and then the authentic railway gates. And then….well it never ends

Work on Carriage No. 12 (‘Bob’) has now been completed with fine tuning continuing on our new ‘N’ Class steam engine

Like March April was a bit of a washout as it seemed to rain almost every Sunday, except on the sunny May Bank holiday Monday. Anyhow Spring has finally sprung and our passengers have been able to see the blossom out in the cherry and apple orchards.

The upgrade to the Station signalling systems has been completed with the signal frame tidied up and the shunt signal to platforms 1 & 2 in use. We have also set up a direction repeater down-line of Barry’s Box.

March was a bit of a washout as it seemed to rain almost every Sunday. However thanks to the magic of the Brogdale  Easter Bunny the Bank Holiday  weekend was packed,  with the railway proving very popular and having to run extra trains.

As might be expected we remain high on the list of local attractions especially for families. Perhaps its our £1.50 fare or our Sunday running from 11am to around 4pm or our Father Christmas runs or maybe our bookable kids’ parties  or friendly staff. It’s hard to tell.

Having had a couple of weeks off for Christmas it’s back to the grindstone of maintenance and development and generally tiding up

The Railway has just brought a new 4 seater closed carriage. It originally came from KERRS, a miniature railway in Arbroath, Scotland via the Royal Victoria Park Railway at Southampton. Have wheels, will travel it seems. Once re-engineered the carriage is to painted in Brunswick  Green to match our new build carriage stock and steam engine

December saw the Railway hosting a formal visit by Santa Claus. Along with his elves and invisible reindeer Santa took up temporary residence in his grotto where he met hundreds of good and not so good children. He also had time to make some surprise breakfast visits to the Brogdale café. Our thanks go out to everyone who came visited, all the staff who ran the Santa Expresses and to the weather for holding off the rain.

As carefully explained to the platform staff by an alert 5 year old Santa’s grotto is always at the North Pole and not the South. The South Pole is apparently where penguins live and penguins do not get involved with Santa stuff.  Noted

November was something of a quiet month. This may have been due to the fact it rained most Sundays and sensible people stayed indoors. Such was the rain that our yard flooded twice with the turntable being up to six inches deep in water.

For those who don’t read our Facebook pages we are sad to advise Mogul the weekend railway cat died this month. Staff found Mogul in the station and took him straight to the vets. It seems Mogul had suffered a disabling stroke. He was given a final trip around Brogdale with our N Class and has been buried in the station where he spent many happy years eating, drinking and being stroked. He is much missed.

October has been yet another hectic month. The two day Brogdale Apple festival was heaving and for the Railway it was busy- busy- busy as we ran trains all day. Thanks to all passengers for coming and our volunteer crews who worked their socks off.

Ticket sales for our Santa Specials at Christmas are doing well. To be fair to everyone and to avoid disappointment this year we are running a pre-booking service only. As regards dates we will be running Saturday and Sunday 6th & 7th Dec, and Sunday 14th After the 14th we close down for the winter!
