January was recovery time for the volunteers after the Christmas Specials. Work recommenced in February, concentrating on maintenance.
To date work has focused on two project areas. The first is track work. This involves a major project of replacing wooden sleepers with concrete the advantage of which is that they are ultra-stable and unlike wooden sleepers never eventually rot. So far about 50 have been switched.
The second project has been fettling the carriage stock and engines. Wheels have been greased, paintwork washed down, chips repaired and glass windows polished. Restoration of our steam engine “Robin” has now been completed and it’s due for testing in March.
In addition, the depot at Plumleigh has been tidied up and wooden palings and gates in the Maintenance Yard replaced. The proposed platform extension at Brogdale Central is still in its planning stage.
What with February pretending to be early Spring the various grassy areas around the railway estate have suddenly grown. Grass cutting is due to be started towards the middle of March when it will probably be snowing…….
Weather permitting the Railway should be reopening on the first Sunday March 2019. Check this/our website for further details
As ever DIYers, engineers, signalmen, guards/drivers are more than welcome to join our Railway Society. We offer equal opportunities to anyone over 16 and so if any potential volunteers would like to see what we can offer then contact us via our website to arrange a tour of the railway estate or just visit on a Sunday and take it from there
